A Word About the Intentional Draws in Roanoke

By now you’ve probably heard abut the fiasco with the top 8 players at the Roanoke Regionals at Star City Games all taking byes in the final round of Swiss to be guaranteed a place in the top 8. This prevented the 9th and 10th place players from moving up into the top 8.

9th place at least got a set of dice though (the tournament kits come with an extra set as a gift to the TO, which they gave away). I think getting to play in the top 8 is worth more than the dice themselves, but as far as consolation prizes go, it’s pretty damn good. Very classy move by Star City.

But what about 10th place? A player who would have made the cut, but who didn’t, and walked away with nothing but the participation prize. What about him?

More importantly, What can you do for him?

I asked, and he said you can send him tequila. Seriously, for all the salt y’all are putting out there, some tequila to go with it would be nice. I’ll supply the limes.

Also, 10th place was me. I’m saying send me tequila. Or quit whining about the tournament. Either one is fine by me.

I prefer the tequila.

If you’re in the NoVa area, I’ll be at Chuy’s from 5-6pm tomorrow before Curio’s Tuesday night tournament. If you’re not in the area, I’ll give you my address and you can mail me a bottle. Minis, pints, fifths. However pissed off you are, send me that much booze. Are you 1.75 liters pissed off? Faaaantastic! You can either PM me on Reddit, or leave your e-mail address as a comment here, and I’ll give you my mailing address to send booze to.

Otherwise, shut the hell up.

Look, I’m not saying you can’t have an opinion about tournament structure. I’ve got one, I’ve written about it, and that’s fine. But, if you’re going to get mad at the players, especially if you’re going to start insulting them, the price to entry into that conversation is that you buy me a drink.

I’m serious. If you think the situation is so bad that it calls for insulting other players, but you don’t think it’s bad enough to buy someone directly harmed by it a single friggin’ drink, then you’re not just an asshole, but a cheap asshole.

You can be cheap, or you can be an asshole, but don’t be both.

In all honestly, while I think the rules do have some issues (in this case it’s that mod wins effectively made this a 44 person tournament instead of 45, so it only needed 5 rounds to begin with), I have no hard feelings towards the players.

Did I get knocked out because they all took draws? Sure.

But, I also got knocked out because I didn’t fly Jake aggressively enough in my first loss, and because I flew him too aggressively and made a poor barrel roll in my second loss. I got knocked out by the draws just as much as I got knocked out by having 2 losses in the first 5 rounds.

I had a good time, and I’m not mad.

What I am is sober.

And that’s not okay.

[Edited by mod] I dunno. I think it’s pretty [handsome] for the top 8 to do that. And if someone does something [handsome], does that make them a [handsome devil]? Yes, but that’s just my irrelevant opinion apparently.

    Yes! Exactly this!
The rules were set up so that a number of players had an incentive to basically take a round off, relax and not spend mental energy as they went into the toughest part of the schedule. I have a hard time blaming anyone for that.

It’s a bad set of incentives though, and should be revisited. I mean “fly casual” still implies flying…

Congrats on taking 10th, though! Taking 10th in Virginia is a bit like taking 10th in a major Korean SC2 tournament. It’s a significant achievement.

Very informative! I have a few questions I’d like to ask, the first of which is would you be interested in doing an interview? My local group is starting a podcast, and I’d love to hear about your experience at Roanake. Not for the uh, controversy, but more about the lists and the competition itself. Even just a simple Q&A live or an email exchange would be great. Thanks in advance.

My favorite thing in the world is not having to hear myself speak.

But my second favorite thing is hearing myself speak. Second best is good enough for me!

Well alright then. Since you’re the admin I assume you can just use the email supplied. Send me an email and we’ll set it up. Right now it looks like we’ll be doing it in two weeks. Looking forward to it!

I am not angry at the players although I am not sure I would be as forgiving about it as you are.
In my view there is no way that this could not be considered collusion which is expressly forbidden.
At some point the TO must have been aware of the top 8’s plan. When this happened I would have expected the TO to tap them on the shoulder and gently remind them that colluding would get them expelled from the tournament.

What collusion do you think happened?

I don’t think any of the tables consulted with each other about whether or not to draw, nor would they need to.

So, if I’m reading this right, you’re not angry at the top 8 players for their collusion (I don’t buy into the coincidence of four separate tables all intentionally drawing and not colluding), but yourself for not flying better earlier on?

From my point of view, it should be both. On the one hand, you are correct for pointing out things you could have done better in your losses, but on the other, you flew damn hard to be in with an outside shot at the top 8 cut at a regional event, only to have that chance denied you. Not because some other player had a better MOV, but because 3 of the 6 vulnerable players were suddenly not vulnerable to losing and having bad MOV, which might have seen you through.

Having been on the receiving end of the game being taken out of my hands (I was slow played out of a regional event’s top 8 last year), I know for a fact I would be incredibly angry about it.

Fair play for being so level-headed and calm about it all. At the end of the day, 10th at a regional is still a massive achievement deserving of congratulations, so congratulations. :P

The intent here is not to call you out, but to gain a better understanding of your point of view. If you feel this is tequila worthy, drop me a message, and I’ll hook you up. :)

I’m not upset about collusion because there wasn’t any. When Table 2 decided to draw, that decision didn’t rely on Tables 3 or 4 also deciding to draw.

If I’m at table 2 with 20 match points, I’d prefer to leave with a guaranteed 21 match points. This is true even if Table 3 plays it out and has someone with 25 and someone else with 20, or if they both draw and have two people with 21. Either situation puts me in the top 8, so my decision is completely independent of theirs.

    Thank you for the post.

I would like to buy you a drink, but since I am British, the postal costs will be prohibitive. I’ll send you some money on PayPal, if you’ll accept that.

Honestly, I don’t like IDs in any game, never have and I don’t think I ever will.

I am not angry about the fact that ID exist and are used, I am just disappointed.
